When we choose a more secluded destination, it often requires extra preparation but can lead to significant savings. Since these locations are farther from stores, restaurants and attractions, we tend to cook more meals at the RV and spend our time enjoying nature-based activities that are often free. Before arriving, we make sure to plan ahead for groceries, fuel stops and Wi-Fi access. Traveling with kids and dogs also means knowing where the nearest hospital, urgent care and veterinary clinic are located. Because of the added planning involved, we usually stay in these destinations for one to two weeks.
On the other hand, busier cities require less preparation but often come with higher daily expenses. The convenience of nearby grocery stores, restaurants and attractions makes everyday life easier and provides plenty of opportunities to explore. We typically stay in these locations for a month at a time, which allows us to fully experience the area while often taking advantage of monthly campground rates. Many RV resorts offer discounts for longer stays, although we've found those savings can be harder to find in the Northeast.
