Upgrading Your RV: Tips for a Smooth Transition to a New Fifth Wheel
We have been a full-time RV family for six years and our Open Range Fifth Wheel has been with us every step of the journey. Well, we recently just upgraded to a brand-new Open Range 3X Fifth Wheel. A lot of people share about moving out of a house into RV life but not many talk about the transition from one RV to another. Just having gone through this process I will share a few things that made our transition easier and faster.
  • Like transitioning from a house to RV living I would start by going through every space and purging the things you don’t need. Get rid of the things that you haven’t used or seen for a while. Go through those junk drawers you have (I know you have them), go through your closets, your cabinets, cover every inch of your RV getting rid of what no longer serves a purpose for you. Doing this before the move can help with time, space and be a lot less stressful on the day of moving.
  • The next thing we did that was a lifesaver was buying bins. We went and bought sturdy bins that honestly weren’t a whole lot more expensive than boxes. I personally can't stand boxes. Trust me, it’s worth splurging on the bins. Now, I would designate a bin for certain things. Also, quick note, make sure the bins you’re getting will fit through the doors and have a space to go in the old RV and the new RV. Pack the things in these bins that you know you don’t need immediately. Extra towels, off season clothes, toys, etc… Anything you can so instead of moving over each individual item you can just take over a whole bin and unpack them later when you know where you want everything to go.
  • The last thing that helped our move day go smoother was studying the layout of our new RV. Knowing what you’re getting in to can really help the move. We already had a plan of where things were going to go instead of guessing on the day of.

Moral of the story. ORGANIZATION! If you think you're organized, you’re not, so keep going and organize even more. During this whole process, we realized we had accumulated too much and had gotten comfortable in our old RV with the storage space. Just because you might have the storage for something, doesn’t mean you need it. Our new RV is bigger because it gave us a second bathroom and both of our kids now have their own room, but the storage space is smaller. So, we had to make some decisions and get rid of some things.

Honestly, here we are a few weeks later and I could not tell you one item that we donated that we miss.
